Loan scams often target people when they feel financially stressed. The offer may promise instant approval, guaranteed forgiveness or extremely low payments, but hidden warning signs can reveal the truth.

Be cautious when a company guarantees approval without reviewing your income, credit or ability to repay. Legitimate lenders normally evaluate financial information before making an offer.

Another warning sign is an upfront payment. A scammer may call it an application, processing or insurance fee. The person may demand payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or a payment application because these transactions can be difficult to reverse.

Never share your Social Security number, banking password or verification code with an unexpected caller. A scammer may already know some details about you, but that does not prove the person represents a real lender.

Check the lender independently. Search for its official website, physical address, customer-service number and required state registration. Do not trust contact information included in an unsolicited message.

Read the entire loan agreement. Confirm the annual percentage rate, payment schedule, fees, late-payment rules and total repayment amount. Avoid signing documents containing blank spaces or unclear conditions.

Student-loan borrowers should contact their official loan servicer directly before paying a company that promises forgiveness. Legitimate government options generally do not require someone to share their account password with a third party.
